Bay Shore Chiropractic and Cervicogenic Headache

Bay Shore Chiropractic and Cervicogenic Headache

We see a lot of folks with headaches in our Bay Shore office, and Dr. Selzer has been able to assist many of them. For that matter, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that 50% of all adults deal with some type of headache disorder, so this really isn’t shocking. One of the most frequent sorts of headaches that our patients suffer from is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic can usually help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that arises from problems in the cervical spine. It might be a result of an issue with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it could be a result of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine creates constriction or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can bring about headache pain.

How do you identify if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Other than being given a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is sometimes combined with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Headache Relief with Chiropractic

Considering cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is initiating them is remedied, it is vital to receive treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective solution, and one that can provide a considerable amount of pain relief.

In one study published in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts looked at 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. One-half were given chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was evaluated 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic offered the best outcomes.

Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments provided patients more significant pain relief and reduced the number of headaches that occurred. Additionally, it also mitigated the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
